Providing appropriate enrichment in pig finishing houses is legally required across the EU and directly improves welfare by enabling species-typical rooting and exploration behaviours.
Barren finishing environments prevent pigs from expressing natural rooting and exploration behaviours, causing frustration and increasing risk of tail biting and fighting. Effective enrichment reduces abnormal behaviour, improves body condition, reduces mortality from trauma, and improves slaughter outcomes. Welfare is best served by providing rooting substrate, manipulable materials and sufficient space.
