Evidence-based resources for animal welfare
An in-depth guide to lameness in pigs, one of the most significant welfare challenges in commercial pig production.
Welfare-centred lameness management requires a systematic approach combining early detection, appropriate treatment, and housing improvement. Locomotion scoring should be performed regularly for all breeding stock. Lame animals should be separated and given appropriate treatment (antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, foot trimming). Floor design improvements, particularly reducing concrete slipperiness and wet areas, reduce lameness prevalence. Culling criteria should be welfare-based.
