Evidence-based resources for animal welfare
Mycotoxins in contaminated feed cause a range of welfare problems in pigs. This guide covers recognition, prevention, and management.
Welfare-centred mycotoxin management requires feed quality monitoring and appropriate storage to prevent mould growth. Feed samples should be tested when mycotoxicosis is suspected. Removing contaminated feed is the primary intervention. Mycotoxin binders (clays, yeast cell wall products) reduce absorption of specific toxins. Supportive care including good nutrition and minimising other stressors supports recovery. Prevention through good grain storage, correct moisture levels, and aeration is most effective.
