Pain management in pigs has historically lagged behind companion animal medicine, with routine painful procedures often performed without adequate analgesia, but this is changing.
Pigs experience pain as acutely as other sentient animals but have historically received less analgesia than companion animals. The gap is closing as licensed products become available and stockpeople become more skilled at recognising pain. Routine provision of analgesia for any painful procedure is now an achievable welfare standard.
