Tail biting is a serious welfare problem in pig production and the industry is under increasing pressure to prevent it through enrichment and management rather than routine tail docking.
Tail biting causes severe welfare impacts through pain from bite wounds, infection, and in severe cases spinal abscesses or death. Routine tail docking to prevent biting is itself a painful procedure causing acute and potentially chronic pain. True welfare improvement requires addressing the root causes through enrichment, appropriate stocking density, good nutrition and environmental management.
