Tail biting in pigs causes severe suffering. Rather than docking tails as a preventive measure, enrichment-based systems can effectively prevent biting without surgery.
Both tail docking (without anaesthesia) and tail biting cause significant suffering. Docking is performed to prevent biting rather than treat a welfare problem — yet the underlying causes of biting (frustration, competition, health issues) remain. Dutch and Danish research demonstrates that high-quality enrichment, lower stocking density and health monitoring can achieve low biting rates in undocked pigs.
