Pig tail docking creates a welfare paradox. Routine tail docking of neonatal piglets causes acute pain during and immediately after the procedure and removes sensory tissue. However, the alternative - leaving pigs with intact tails in typical intensive housing - risks severe tail-biting that causes more severe and prolonged welfare harm. The underlying welfare problem is the housing and management conditions that cause tail-biting, which docking treats only symptomatically. True resolution requires providing pigs with appropriate enrichment, straw, and adequate space that reduces tail-biting motivation. The continued failure to implement required alternatives represents a regulatory and industry welfare failure.
