Water Provision and Welfare in Pig Housing

Adequate water provision is a fundamental welfare requirement for pigs, yet water deprivation and poor drinker design remain common welfare concerns.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Water deprivation is an acute welfare emergency in pigs. Even short periods without water cause significant distress, as indicated by increased aggression, stereotypic behavior such as bar biting, and cortisol elevation. Nipple drinker failure or blockage can deny water to entire groups without obvious external signs. Water quality including temperature, mineral content, and microbial load affects welfare and health. Drinker height must match pig size throughout growth. Providing water from multiple sources and through multiple delivery systems provides redundancy and choice, improving welfare.
