Adequate clean water provision is fundamental to pig welfare, with water restriction and poor quality representing serious welfare failures in commercial production.
Pigs deprived of adequate clean water suffer rapidly: thirst causes distress, reduced feed intake, and compromised thermoregulation. Lactating sows with insufficient water reduce milk production, impairing piglet welfare. Contaminated water causes gastrointestinal disease and further reduces intake. Inappropriate drinker height or flow rate prevents adequate consumption even when water is nominally available. Regular water system maintenance and flow rate checking are essential welfare management activities.
