Research into positive emotional states in pigs, including optimism, play, and prosocial behaviour, is transforming how welfare science approaches pig farm assessments.
The scientific framework for assessing pig welfare has evolved significantly from simple absence-of-suffering metrics to encompass positive emotional states that are intrinsically valuable. Pigs experience curiosity, play drive, social bonding, and positive anticipation that represent genuine welfare goods beyond avoidance of pain. Farm systems that provide enrichment, space, and appropriate social conditions generate positive welfare experiences that cannot be captured by observing only injury rates and disease prevalence. The welfare goal of enabling positive experiences requires fundamentally different farm design than minimising negative ones.
