Sow Body Condition: Welfare Implications of Nutritional Management

Maintaining appropriate body condition in sows is essential for reproductive performance, longevity, and welfare throughout the production cycle.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Sows that enter farrowing in poor condition suffer more during the energetically demanding lactation period. Excessive body weight loss during nursing causes metabolic stress, reduced milk production harming piglets, and impaired return to oestrus. Thin sows show signs of chronic hunger and have higher rates of stereotypic behaviours. Over-fat sows suffer at farrowing from obstructive dystocia. Individualised feeding and regular BCS monitoring are key welfare tools.
