UK broiler chicken welfare regulations set a maximum stocking density of 33kg/m2 rising to 42kg/m2 under enhanced conditions. Better Chicken Commitment signatories commit to lower densities of 30kg/m2 with superior breed requirements.
At the highest legal stocking densities, broilers in the final week before slaughter have minimal ability to move freely, access feeders and drinkers, or establish social interactions. Litter quality deteriorates rapidly at high densities due to moisture accumulation, causing foot pad dermatitis that is painful and associated with lameness. Lower density systems with better litter quality and slower-growing breeds represent a significantly better welfare outcome.
