Enriched Colony Cage Welfare in Laying Hens

Enriched colony cages replaced conventional battery cages in the EU in 2012, but welfare outcomes compared to barn and free-range systems remain debated.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Enriched cages prevent some natural behaviours including wing-flapping and extended foraging that hens are highly motivated to perform. Dust bathing in the small scratch area is behavioural but lacks the full dust bathing functionality of loose litter. Cage-free systems allow more natural behaviour but can have higher mortality from feather pecking and disease pressure if poorly managed.
