Keel bone fractures represent one of the most significant unresolved welfare challenges in poultry production. The chronic pain from fractures affects behaviour, resource access, and quality of life. Interventions include breeding for improved bone strength, dietary calcium and vitamin D optimisation, perch design to reduce collision fractures, and housing modifications. Welfare assessment should include keel palpation to detect fractures.
