Frothy bloat is a welfare emergency in sheep (and cattle) caused by accumulation of gas trapped in stable rumen foam, requiring urgent intervention.

Frothy bloat occurs when gas produced by fermentation becomes trapped in a stable protein foam, preventing normal eructation
It is most common on rapidly fermenting legume pastures (clover, lucerne, sulla) in autumn and spring
Affected sheep show progressive ruminal distension, particularly on the left side, with respiratory distress as the rumen compresses the thorax
Treatment includes anti-foaming agents (simethicone, vegetable oil) administered by drench or stomach tube, or emergency rumenotomy in severe cases

Welfare Considerations

Frothy bloat causes rapid welfare deterioration from discomfort to severe respiratory compromise within minutes to hours. The rising rumen pressure creates pain, distress and increasingly impaired breathing as gas accumulation presses against the diaphragm. Without intervention, severe bloat is fatal. Welfare management requires immediate recognition — progressive abdominal distension in sheep recently moved to lush legume pasture should trigger immediate assessment and treatment. Prevention through management of legume pasture access is more reliable than treatment.

What You Can Do

Introduce sheep to lush legume pastures gradually and avoid turnout when pastures are wet or heavily dew-laden
Carry anti-bloat preparations (simethicone drench or vegetable oil) when sheep are on bloat-risk pastures
Inspect sheep grazing legume pastures twice daily — early detection allows treatment before respiratory compromise develops
Use rumen magnets for hardware disease prevention but note these do not prevent frothy bloat — separate interventions are required
