Welfare Considerations

Swayback lambs are born unable to use their hindlimbs due to spinal cord degeneration caused by prenatal copper deficiency. Pine disease causes progressive wasting and weakness over weeks. These conditions are largely preventable through appropriate mineral supplementation based on blood and liver sampling to identify deficiencies before clinical disease occurs. Copper toxicity from over-supplementation causes acute haemolytic crisis with jaundice and rapid deterioration. Mineral management requires flock-specific assessment, not blanket supplementation.
