Shearing imposes acute handling stress on sheep, particularly flocks with limited prior human contact. Rough handling before and during shearing causes fear responses, increased cortisol and cardiac stress. Cuts from poor blade technique are painful and create infection risk. The transition from pre-shearing wool protection to post-shearing exposure is a significant thermal stress event in cold climates. Careful scheduling (dry, mild weather; shelter available), trained shearers and calm handling during penning substantially reduce welfare costs.
