Updated guidance on preventing pregnancy toxaemia in twin-bearing ewes to protect welfare.
Pregnancy toxaemia causes progressive neurological deterioration — ewes become dull, collapse, and die without intervention. Welfare-focused prevention uses body condition scoring at tupping to identify thin ewes and condition them appropriately, ultrasound scanning to identify twin-bearing ewes, and targeted supplementary feeding in the final 6 weeks. Prompt recognition and treatment of early cases saves welfare.
