Evidence-based resources for animal welfare
Urinary calculi (urolithiasis) is a painful and life-threatening emergency in male sheep. This guide covers welfare-centred recognition and management.
Welfare-centred management of urinary calculi requires immediate veterinary attention. Urethral obstruction causes extreme pain and rapid deterioration. Amputation of the urethral process may relieve obstruction in early cases. Perineal urethrostomy provides longer-term relief but carries risks in fattening lambs. Prevention through correct Ca:P ratios in the diet, adequate water access, salt supplementation to increase water intake, and avoiding excessive concentrate feeding is most effective.
