Turkey production is concentrated around the Christmas market and welfare standards have improved but the rapidly growing breeds used have significant welfare challenges similar to commercial broilers.
Commercial turkeys bred for rapid growth suffer from the same locomotion problems and cardiovascular stress as fast-growing broiler chickens. They are often kept in large barns with limited environmental complexity. Welfare-positive turkey production using slower-growing breeds with outdoor access produces genuinely better welfare at higher cost.
