Male dairy calves in the UK are either killed at birth, exported live, or reared for veal — with rose veal systems offering significantly better welfare than either killing or export while providing economic value for dairy farmers.
Male dairy calves killed at birth or within days experience no welfare — but they represent wasted potential lives. Live-exported calves face the full welfare costs of long-distance international transport. Rose veal calves reared in RSPCA Assured or Soil Association certified systems live in social groups with straw bedding allowing lying, playing, and expressing normal calf behaviour. Welfare outcomes in certified rose veal are far superior to white veal systems and live export. Consumer demand for rose veal provides the economic incentive for farms to choose rearing over killing.
