The adder is the UK's only venomous snake and is experiencing significant population declines due to habitat fragmentation, persecution and loss of warm basking sites.
Adder welfare is primarily threatened by deliberate killing which remains common despite full legal protection. Fear-driven persecution eliminates individuals that represent years of growth and reproduction. Habitat fragmentation isolates populations below viable size. Increasing recreational access to heathland disturbs basking sites during critical early spring thermoregulation. Climate warming may affect thermal ecology but the net effects are uncertain.
