The adder, Britain's only venomous snake, has declined dramatically and faces welfare threats from deliberate killing, road mortality and loss of heathland habitat.
Deliberately killed adders suffer traumatic death from shooting, spades or burning. Road mortality causes direct death or injury. Adders disturbed at hibernation sites in winter may be killed by subsequent cold exposure or predation after failing to return to adequate hibernation sites. Their legal protection is poorly enforced, meaning many deaths go uninvestigated. Habitat loss and fragmentation prevents recolonisation of areas where local extinctions have occurred.
