Adder welfare is uniquely challenged by human fear and consequent persecution. Despite being legally protected, adders are frequently killed when encountered — by farmers, walkers, and householders who fear the perceived danger. This killing is based on a dramatically overestimated danger — adder bites, while painful, are rarely life-threatening to healthy adults and are easily treated. The welfare harm of persecution is significant at the population level given already declining numbers.
Individual adder welfare depends on maintaining access to basking sites, hibernation locations, and foraging habitat in a relatively undisturbed connectivity. Site fidelity means that disturbance or destruction of key basking locations causes disproportionate local population impact. Respecting adder presence on heathland and grassland — observing from distance rather than disturbing — is the most important individual welfare action.
