Avocets are iconic wetland birds that have successfully recolonised the UK, but their welfare depends on carefully managed brackish lagoon habitats that are increasingly threatened by sea level rise.

Welfare Considerations

Avocet welfare depends critically on habitat quality. When managed lagoons become too saline or too fresh due to sea level change or inadequate sluice management, invertebrate prey availability collapses and adults cannot feed efficiently. Productivity is reduced when food is scarce, with chicks growing more slowly and showing higher mortality. Avocets nesting on low-lying islands are vulnerable to flooding from storm surges, which can kill entire clutches and small chicks by drowning or hypothermia. Climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of such flooding events, creating welfare emergencies in breeding colonies.
