Avocet Welfare and Habitat Restoration Success in UK

Avocets were extinct as UK breeding birds until 1947, when RSPB habitat management at Minsmere and Havergate Island enabled recolonisation. The current UK population of 2,000+ pairs demonstrates what targeted habitat restoration can achieve.

Welfare Considerations

Avocet welfare is closely tied to water level management in reserve lagoons. Too deep and they cannot wade-feed; too shallow and nesting islands become accessible to mammalian predators. Nest flooding from coastal storm events can kill entire clutches. The RSPB management of saline lagoon systems has demonstrably improved individual and population welfare by creating conditions that allow successful breeding where it had been impossible.
