Bat Maternity Roost Welfare: Summer Colony Protection

Bat maternity colonies gather in summer to raise pups together. The welfare of these roosts is particularly vulnerable during the building renovation season.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Bat pups are completely dependent on their mothers for warmth and food. Disturbance that causes mothers to abandon the roost leaves pups unable to maintain temperature and they die from hypothermia within hours. Sealing of roost sites during renovation work kills entire colonies through starvation and exposure. The legal protection of bat roosts requires active survey before renovation work — a Reasonable Avoidance Measures plan or bat licence is required from Natural England.
