The Eurasian bittern (Botaurus stellaris) is recovering from near-extinction in the UK through targeted reedbed restoration. Each individual matters for a population still under 200 booming males.
Bittern welfare depends on reedbed quality — shallow water with abundant fish (particularly ruffe, perch, and eels) determines feeding success. Cold winters cause stress when fish retreat to deeper water beyond bittern reach. Reedbed management (rotational cutting to maintain diverse structure) provides both nesting cover and open channels for hunting. Mink predation at nest sites causes catastrophic breeding failure. Each individual's survival contributes meaningfully to a population still recovering from the brink.
