Black grouse lekking behaviour is the central reproductive event for male birds. Lek sites are traditional, often used for decades, and disturbance during dawn display in March-May causes severe disruption. Disturbed males cease displaying, breaking down the hierarchy establishment process and potentially causing abandonment of the lek site entirely. For females, lek disturbance reduces access to mate assessment that is essential for optimal mate choice. The cumulative effect of repeated disturbance across the display season significantly reduces breeding success and welfare for a species already at low population density.
