Brown pelicans are iconic Gulf Coast waterbirds vulnerable to oil spill impacts, with significant welfare challenges for oiled birds requiring intensive rehabilitation care.
Oil-fouled pelicans experience severe welfare impacts: loss of plumage waterproofing causes hypothermia as feathers become saturated with water, and diving ability is impaired preventing feeding. Ingested oil causes gastrointestinal toxicity and organ damage. The rehabilitation process itself involves stressful repeated handling for washing, force-feeding during recovery, and transport. However, well-implemented rehabilitation significantly improves welfare outcomes for individual birds that would otherwise die slowly from oil exposure.
