Bullfinch Welfare in Woodland Edge and Orchards

The bullfinch is a brightly coloured bird of woodland edges and orchards, declining due to loss of scrubby habitat and seed-bearing plants.

Males have striking pink-red breast; females are pinkish-brown
Feeds on buds and seeds of ash, oak, and fruit trees
Historically persecuted by fruit growers for bud damage to orchards

Welfare Considerations

Loss of scrubby woodland edge habitat and overgrown hedgerows removes foraging and nesting opportunities. Ash dieback is removing a key seed source. Historical persecution in orchards is no longer legal but crop damage conflicts persist. Natural garden seed plants including honesty and verbascum support winter feeding.
