Welfare Considerations

Trichomonosis causes suffering in individual chaffinches through progressive inability to swallow food, leading to starvation over days. The disease spreads through shared contaminated food at garden feeders, making feeder hygiene a direct welfare intervention. Beyond disease, chaffinches in managed woodland require structural diversity including mature trees with insect-rich bark for foraging. Garden feeding provides important supplementary food particularly during cold winters, but clean, fresh food in hygienic feeders is essential to prevent disease amplification.

What You Can Do

Clean garden feeders thoroughly with disinfectant at least every two weeks, or weekly during disease outbreaks
Remove and destroy any birds found dead near feeders and report to the Garden Wildlife Health project
Provide a diversity of seed types and food stations to avoid dense aggregation at single points
Support reporting of sick birds to the British Trust for Ornithology to enable disease monitoring
