Chinese water deer are a non-native species established in East Anglia and the Midlands whose welfare is influenced by predation, road casualties and management.
Chinese water deer face welfare challenges from harsh winters, road traffic collisions and predation. Their requirement for dense cover makes them vulnerable to agricultural land management changes. As a non-native species without natural predators, management including culling may be necessary to prevent over-population. Their global rarity in their Chinese homeland gives the UK population special conservation significance.
