The curlew is experiencing a severe population collapse in England and Wales, with farmland intensification and predation the primary drivers.
Loss of traditional hay meadows and rush pasture has removed nesting habitat. Predation of eggs and chicks by foxes and corvids in remaining habitat causes very low breeding productivity. Climate drying of moorland breeding habitat adds additional pressure. Without intervention the UK breeding population may be locally extinct within decades.
