The dunnock is among the UK's most overlooked garden birds despite being common and widespread. Its complex mating system and decline in the wider countryside make it a welfare and conservation subject of interest.
Dunnock welfare is affected by habitat loss and simplification — the loss of dense, layered hedgerows with rough grassland bases removes both nesting cover and invertebrate foraging habitat. Those parasitised by cuckoos invest enormous energy raising a foreign chick that dwarfs them within days. Garden dunnocks benefit from dense shrub cover, rough ground and reduced chemical use that supports their invertebrate prey. They are easily overlooked but reward patient observation.
