European Nightjar Welfare: Heathland Disturbance and Dog Walking

European nightjars are ground-nesting heathland birds highly vulnerable to disturbance from off-lead dogs, particularly during the breeding season from May to August.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Nightjars disturbed at nest sites by off-lead dogs suffer acute stress from the flush response and the loss of incubation time exposing eggs or chicks to temperature extremes. Off-lead dogs that find nest sites may eat eggs or injure small chicks directly. Females repeatedly disturbed during incubation lose body condition from reduced feeding opportunity and thermal costs of re-warming eggs. Ground-nesting birds cannot escape disturbance by moving to elevated sites, making keeping dogs on leads in nesting areas critical to their welfare.
