Welfare Considerations

Stomach plastic causes false satiety — birds feel full but receive no nutrition — leading to progressive wasting. Mechanical blockage prevents normal digestion. Toxic chemicals adsorbed onto plastic particles cause additional organ damage. The scale of plastic contamination in the North Sea makes this one of the most widespread seabird welfare problems in European waters. Reduction of plastic pellet loss from industry and fishing gear is the most direct welfare intervention.
