Giant pandas are no longer endangered following successful captive breeding programs, but welfare considerations in captivity and for reintroduced individuals require ongoing attention. Over 600 pandas are now in captivity globally.
Giant pandas in captive breeding programs require specialised bamboo diets that are labour-intensive to provide at adequate quality and quantity. Social housing is limited by the species largely solitary natural behaviour, which can create isolation welfare concerns. Reintroduced individuals that have not been raised with minimal human contact may fail to develop the skills and fear responses needed for survival in the wild, creating post-release welfare risks.
