Greater flamingos breed in large colonies on salt lakes and saline lagoons across southern Europe and Africa, with welfare dependent on water levels, prey availability, and minimal disturbance.
Greater flamingo welfare during the breeding season is acutely sensitive to water level management. Nest flooding during high rainfall events causes egg loss and chick mortality. Conversely, falling water levels that allow ground predators to access colony islands cause abandonment and predation of eggs and chicks. Drought-driven water abstraction from breeding lakes has caused catastrophic colony failures at multiple sites. Management of water levels through sluice control and reduced upstream abstraction during the breeding season directly improves welfare outcomes for tens of thousands of breeding birds.
