Welfare Considerations

Cranes captured for the pet trade suffer extreme stress, nutritional deficiencies and social isolation. Wild birds face habitat loss from draining of wetlands for agriculture and urban expansion. Power line collisions and pesticide poisoning are additional mortality factors. Legal protections exist but enforcement remains challenging.
