Grey herons nest in traditional heronries, often in tall trees, where colony welfare is influenced by disturbance, fish availability and severe winter weather.
Colony welfare depends on minimising disturbance during the nesting season. Human disturbance causes mass abandonment of nests with consequent egg and chick mortality. Cold weather during early breeding can be fatal for eggs and small chicks. Fish availability in nearby water bodies is critical for adult feeding and provisioning of growing chicks.
