Grey Heron Welfare and Fisheries Conflict

The grey heron is a large waterbird that has recovered well following legal protection, but still faces persecution and conflicts with fish farming and angling interests.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Grey herons face welfare risks from illegal persecution including shooting and trapping near fish farms and garden ponds. Entanglement in fishing line and ingestion of lead weights cause injury and death. Heron colonies are sensitive to disturbance during nesting and require undisturbed woodland near feeding areas. Legal non-lethal deterrents at fish farms including heron guards, netting, and electric fences should be used in preference to lethal control. Public education about heron ecology and legal protection status reduces illegal killing.
