Hawksbill sea turtles feed almost exclusively on sponges on coral reefs and are critically endangered from historical shell trade and ongoing threats.
Historical harvesting for tortoiseshell products eliminated populations across much of the range. Despite CITES protection, illegal shell trade continues in some regions. Coral reef bleaching from climate change is destroying the sponge communities hawksbills depend on. Bycatch in artisanal fisheries continues to cause significant mortality.
