Hedgehogs build hibernation nests in materials similar to bonfire heaps including leaves, sticks, and garden debris. Bonfires built and left before November 5th are frequently occupied by hedgehogs that are killed when the fire is lit.
Hedgehogs burned in bonfires suffer severe burns to their bodies and extremities before death. Survivors with partial burns suffer acute pain and require intensive veterinary care including pain management, wound dressing, and fluid support. Many do not survive extensive burns. The welfare harm is entirely preventable through the simple measure of rebuilding bonfires on the day of use or thoroughly checking before lighting.
