Jackdaws are highly intelligent social corvids that nest in cavities in old buildings, trees, and cliffs, and have declined in many areas as old buildings are renovated and chimney stacks sealed.
Jackdaw welfare depends on maintaining access to nesting cavities. Chimney cowls and building renovation block established nest sites. As highly social and intelligent birds, jackdaws show clear distress behaviours when colony sites are disrupted. Maintaining some open chimneys or installing jackdaw nest boxes helps.
