The Kentish plover no longer breeds in Britain but remains widespread on Continental European coasts where beach recreation causes significant welfare impacts on ground-nesting birds.
Beach recreation, off-road vehicles, unleashed dogs and intensive human use of nesting beaches causes egg trampling, nest abandonment, and chick mortality. Heat stress on exposed sandy beaches during unusually warm periods can kill eggs and chicks. Conservation of Kentish plover in Europe requires active management including fencing of nest sites and public education during the breeding season.
