Kestrel Farmland Hunting Welfare and Decline

Kestrels were once the most visible raptor over British farmland but have declined by over 50% since the 1970s. Changes in farming practice have drastically reduced their prey base.

They hunt primarily by detecting UV-reflective vole urine trails
A kestrel needs to catch approximately 4-8 voles per day to sustain itself
Rough grassland and field margins are critical hunting habitats

Welfare Considerations

When field margins are removed and grassland managed too intensively, vole populations collapse and kestrels face starvation. Breeding pairs fail to raise young when prey is insufficient. Individuals that take alternative prey, such as earthworms, have significantly lower energy intake and body condition. Road-nesting kestrels face vehicle mortality risk to adults and fledglings.

Encourage farmers to create rough grass margins and headlands
Support agri-environment schemes that reward habitat creation for farmland raptors
Install kestrel nest boxes on farm buildings and mature trees
Record kestrel sightings with BTO to track population trends
