The kingfisher is one of the UK's most spectacular birds. It depends entirely on clear, shallow water with abundant small fish. Cold winters and poor water quality are the primary welfare threats.
Kingfishers have exceptionally high metabolic rates and must feed continuously in cold weather. Ice cover over rivers prevents access to fish for days or weeks, causing starvation. Populations typically recover within 2-3 seasons after severe winters if river habitat is adequate. Bank erosion from livestock and flooding destroys nest burrows, making bankside management for livestock exclusion and buffer strips a welfare priority.
