Little Bittern Welfare: Wetland Breeding in Europe

The little bittern is Europe's smallest heron and a secretive reedbed breeder whose welfare depends on undisturbed freshwater marshes and reedbed habitats.

Welfare Considerations

Wetland drainage for agriculture has removed much of the reedbed habitat little bitterns require across Europe. Disturbance from recreational users causes nest abandonment. Mink predation at nest sites causes direct mortality. Climate change is affecting the timing of reedbed productivity relative to breeding requirements. Large-scale reedbed restoration is essential for this and many associated wetland species.
