Little Bittern Welfare and Reedbed Needs

The little bittern is a rare visitor and very occasional breeder in UK reedbeds, one of Europe smallest herons and highly secretive in behaviour.

Welfare Considerations

Loss of reedbeds across Europe has reduced little bittern populations. UK reedbeds are fragmented and often too small to support breeding. Maintaining water levels and preventing reed encroachment on open water is vital.
